The Faculty of Humanities is one of the oldest organisational units of the University of Siedlce.
It was established under the name of „Faculty of Humanities” in 1971 as part of the Higher Teacher Training College (HTTC) formed two years before. It is worth noting that since the beginning of its operations the HTTC comprised the Faculty of Pedagogy, independent of the Faculty of Humanities. Both units survived the reorganisation of the College that was carried out in 1974. Under the regulation of the Council of Ministers of the Polish People's Republic the Higher Teacher Training College was transformed into the Higher School of Pedagogy.
The latter comprised: the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Pedagogy.
The educational offer of the last two faculties was as follows:
1. Faculty of Humanities
a. full-time MA programme – majors:
– Polish language
– Russian language
b. part-time vocational programme – majors:
– Polish language and history
– Russian language for graduates of pedagogical high schools
2. Faculty of Pedagogy
a. full-time MA programme – majors:
– school education
– pre-school education
– special education - rehabilitation of the socially maladjusted
– pedagogy: culture and education specialization (established in 1975)
b. part-time MA programmes – majors:
– school education
– pre-school
– special education - rehabilitation of the socially maladjusted
– pedagogy for graduates of the Higher Teacher Training College
Another reorganisation of the Siedlce School took place in 1977, to the damage of the humanities. As part of transformation of the Higher School of Pedagogy into the Higher School for Agriculture and Pedagogy, the Faculty of Humanities was closed down and the Faculty of Pedagogy was transformed into the Faculty of Pedagogy and Rural Culture. Educational offer of this unit was also reduced to two education specializations i.e. elementary education and pedagogy with major in culture and education. As decision-makers explained, language specializations were closed due to little interest in this kind of studies in the region. As a result of this reorganization, from 1977 to 1978 twelve senior academic staff members resigned from their work in Siedlce.
The Faculty of Humanities was reactivated in 1991. The staff for the new unit comprised employees formerly working at the Faculty of Pedagogy and Rural Culture and at the Institute of Social Sciences. In the following years the local environment was strengthened with the employment of academic teachers from other centres and educating own staff.
Since the beginning of the second period of its operations the Faculty of Humanities has comprised the following institutes: the Institute of Pedagogy (now the Institute of Education), the Institute of Polish Philology (now the Institute of Polish Philology and Speech Therapy) and the Institute of History (now the Institute of History and Foreign Affairs).
In the next years the following were formed: the Institute of Social Sciences (now the Institute of Social Sciences and Security), the Institute of Modern Languages (now the Institute of Modern Languages and Interdisciplinary Research). From 1995 to 2000 the Institute of Management also operated within the structure of the Faculty of Humanities. In 2000 it was transformed into a separate Faculty of Management (now the Faculty of Economic and Legal Sciences).
At present each institute within the structure of the Faculty of Humanities offers undergraduate and graduate studies. Since 2013 the Institute of History and Foreign Affairs as well as the Institute of Social Sciences and Security started doctoral studies in history and security science, respectively.
Currently there are two institutes in the Faculty: the Institute of History and the Institute of Linguistics and Literary Studies. We educate PhD students and undergraduates on five faculties: Polish philology, English philology, history, logopaedics, logopaedics and audiology.
The academic staff of the Faculty conduct individual and team research in the following disciplines: history, linguistics, literary studies. Also the academic teachers, who carry out classes in practical studies: logopaedics, logopaedics and audiology are engaged in research work in this field.
